Ecological Wonders in University of Malaya

Ecological Wonders You Wish You Knew

Recently, Project Rimba announce its plans to plant groves of Winged-Fruit Trees, which is the perfect ground for wildlife to thrive.

The Rimba project, is runs by a group of students and alumni researchers from University Malaya.  These passionate people have turned an empty space on the campus into a beautiful park.

Fortunately, there is a group of people out there preserving the nature. The Rimba Project is a campus sustainability and urban conservation Living Lab with a mission to protect, document and promote biodiversity on campus and beyond.

A research team leader from the Rimba Project, Benjamin Ong revealed the Rimba project documented some 386 trees from 47 species.

“Among the larger tree types are Ficus Benjamina, Cyrtophyllum Fragrans, and Pterocarpus Indicus.

“We also found three types of eagles including Brahminy Kite (Haliastur Indus) and a migratory raptor called the Crested Serpent Eagle.

“During our night research, we discovered owls, bats and uncommon fireflies species which only breeds in clear water.

“This type of firefly, from the genus Luciola, is solitary unlike the riverine ones found in Kuala Selangor which are from the genus Pteroptyx,” he said, according to a local newspaper.

Their overall budget for this project is RM 47,838. The cost of saplings has been absorbed by UM’s Department of Development and Estate Maintenance  (JPPHB).

However that still not enough, they still have lots of costs to cover, which is why they started a campaign on mystartr which is the Malaysia’s largest crowdfunding platform.

You can help to cover the cost not absorbed by JPPHB such as tree planting, tree maintenance, and interpretive materials by supporting their campaign on mystartr.

If they surpass their funding goal, the additional funds will go towards building facilities for the park (benches, walkways & gazebo) and purchasing saplings for their campus greening plan.

Those who contribute RM 5,000 or more will have their names displayed on bench and trees.

The people behind the project will also give you a complimentary guided walk in the park for twenty people, you will also receive an online certificate of appreciation for being a platinum level donor, plus an acknowledgement on the community park plaque and our Facebook page.

Even if you just contribute RM10, you will receive a heartfelt thank you on The Rimba Project’s Facebook.

[This campaign has ended as of 21/2/2018, however, if you are still curious and wants to contribute to their project, just contact them at their Facebook page.]
