A petition on Change.org to rename Covid-19 has garnered the support of many netizens.

Covid-19 was the official name given by the World Health Organization (WHO) for Coronavirus on 12 February 2020.

The virus was first identified in China on Dec 31 2019.

“We now have a name for the disease and it’s Covid-19,” WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters in Geneva, explaining that “co” stood for “corona”,”vi” for “virus” and “d” for “disease”.

According to AFP, Ghebreyesus claim the name was chosen to avoid references to a specific geographical location, animal species or group of people.
