A petition on Change.org to rename Covid-19 has garnered the support of many netizens.
Covid-19 was the official name given by the World Health Organization (WHO) for Coronavirus on 12 February 2020.
The virus was first identified in China on Dec 31 2019.
“We now have a name for the disease and it’s Covid-19,” WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters in Geneva, explaining that “co” stood for “corona”,”vi” for “virus” and “d” for “disease”.
According to AFP, Ghebreyesus claim the name was chosen to avoid references to a specific geographical location, animal species or group of people.
However, some netizens want to rename it as Kung Flu.
If you check change.org, you will see there’s a petition to rename the deadly virus as Kung Flu.
According to Noah Hahn who started the petition, the reason for renaming the virus is so people could call the brave folks who was fighting the disease as ” Kung Flu Fighters”.
A commenter on the website by the name of Ron LeBlanc claimed it’s the right thing to do.
There’s even merchandise for Kung Flu.
A simple online search reveals a few shops online selling shirts with the word printed on.
Below is one of the online shops found online.
