Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh Calls Out Prof Teo Kok Seong Over Narrow Views on Chinese School Students

 


Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh, advised academician Emeritus Professor Datuk Dr. Teo Kok Seong not to be narrow-minded and become like a frog in a well.


He refuted Teo claim that Chinese school students are not very intelligent, citing examples from past UPSR or SPM exams where Chinese school students achieved outstanding results, including in Malay language.


"Everyone knows that the advantage of Chinese school students lies in their proficiency in three languages—Mandarin as their mother tongue, Malay as the national language, and English as an international language,” Wong said, reported Sin Chew Daily. 


He stated that students attending Chinese primary schools generally have no major issues mastering these three languages. 


Of course, student quality is another matter, but Chinese school students have a significant advantage when entering the workforce, he said. 


He added that regardless of ethnicity, anyone who is willing to work hard can master any language, and attending different types of schools will not affect this.


He said the Kuala Lumpur Chong Hwa Independent High School choir won the choir competition at Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka 2024 Language and Literature Festival. 


He said that this proves to narrow-minded professors that Chinese school students are capable.


He hopes that in the future, no one will question the status of multi-stream schools or the love Chinese school students have for the national language.


He firmly believes that every student, regardless of ethnicity, will not be hindered by any language as long as they are committed to learning.


Recently, Teo slammed Chinese schools, claiming that students from Chinese schools lack intelligence. 


“These Chinese students studying in Chinese schools are not very smart.


“Although the school teaches three languages, they’re only good at their mother tongue and are not good at English and Malay,” said Teo.
