Malaysia's 2025 Budget just out, imported luxury items, including avocado, might come with a heftier price tag in Malaysia starting next year.

If buying pricey avocados is an issue, – why not plant your own?

Below are the steps.

10 Easy Steps to Grow Avocados in Malaysia Like a Pro

1. Pick the Perfect Avocado

Start with a ripe, creamy avocado from your local grocery store. Enjoy the fruit, but save the pit!

2. Prep the Pit for Planting

Clean the pit with water, remove any flesh, and let it dry for a few hours.

3. Toothpick Magic

Insert 3-4 toothpicks into the pit to hold it on the edge of a glass of water, with the bottom submerged.

4. Find the Right Spot

Place your glass somewhere sunny, like your kitchen window. It needs warmth to sprout!

5. Watch for Roots

In 4-6 weeks, the pit will crack open and roots will start to grow. Keep the water level constant.

6. Pot It Up

Once the roots are 3-4 inches long, transfer the pit into a pot with soil, burying the roots but leaving the top half exposed.

7. Sunshine & Water Love

Place your avocado plant where it gets plenty of sunlight. Water it regularly, but don’t let it get too soggy!

8. Prune for Strength

Once the stem reaches 6-8 inches, trim it back by half. This helps your avocado tree grow strong and bushy.

9. Repot as It Grows

As your tree grows, it will need a bigger pot. Make sure to repot it when it gets root-bound.

10. Be Patient!

Growing an avocado tree takes time. In Malaysia’s tropical climate, it could take a few years before you see fruit – but the wait will be worth it!

Malaysia’s avocado imports primarily come from the US, Mexico, and South Africa.
